O2Micro International, Ltd, a leading supplier of innovative ICs to notebook manufacturers worldwide, has been granted a United States patent on a backlight striking mechanism, further advancing the commercial feasibility of large monitors utilizing Liquid Crystal Display (LCD).
The patented (#5,892,336) circuit provides a reliable means for simultaneously energizing two Cold-Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs) with a single power supply. This improved striking method maintains uniformity in both current and illumination between the CCFLs.

"This patented technology will allow for much simpler and more cost effective backlight inverter designs in large multi-tube LCD monitor displays."
Multiple CCFLs systems driving two or more lamps, such as those found in the emerging wave of LCD monitors, benefit from this technology through lower inverter design cost and reduced power consumption.
