O2Micro's Patented Free DimmingTM Technology Enables 3-Step Dimming in Mean Well PLM-40 and PLM-40E Series 40W LED Power Supplies

October 13, 2015. O2Micro® International Limited (NASDAQ Global Select Market: OIIM), a global leader in the design, development and marketing of high-performance integrated circuits and solutions, announces that its patented Free Dimming Technology enables 3-Step analog dimming in the Mean Well PLM-40 (110~295VAC) and PLM-40E (180~295VAC) 40W PFC constant current mode LED power supplies.

"Mean Well's 3-Step dimming power supplies enable lighting manufacturers to quickly bring to market LED lighting fixtures featuring O2Micro's revolutionary Free Dimming Technology, enabling consumers to capture the benefits of dimming without the cost, installation and compatibility issues associated with legacy TRIAC dimmers," said Dr. Yung Lin, executive vice president, Intelligent Lighting, O2Micro.

O2Micro's patented Free Dimming Technology enables LED lights to dim using any on/off switch, thus eliminating the burden of installing expensive dimmers. Free Dimming Technology is inherently simple and works with any on/off switch, including wall toggles, paddle switches, pull cords, rotary switches and other types of on/off switches commonly found on walls, extension cords and table/desk lamps.

O2Micro's Free Dimming LED driver product family has broad appeal, working with the more than 85% of lights that are on non-dimming circuits. For consumers, eliminating dimmer cost and installation makes LED lights that incorporate O2Micro's Free Dimming LED drivers easy to use and a great value. O2Micro offers a broad portfolio of Free Dimming LED drivers, including 3-Step, 2-Step and Continuous dimming, and color changing.

MeanWell_power_supply"According to industry estimates, there are roughly 150 million incandescent dimmers installed in the US, a paltry number compared to the installed base of billions of lights. O2Micro's Free Dimming Technology, now available in the Mean Well PLM-40 and PLM-40E, allows lighting manufacturers to address this enormous, untapped market opportunity," said Cliff Hirsch, business development, Intelligent Lighting, O2Micro; contact Mr. Hirsch via email at cliff.hirsch@o2micro.com.

O2Micro's 2-Step, 3-Step, Continuous, and 2 Color Dimming demonstration videos are available on the Company's website home page at http://www.o2micro.com/index.html.

Mean Well's PLM-40 and PLM-40E Series enable lighting manufacturers to easily add 3-Step dimming to their fixtures, providing enhanced value and fulfilling energy efficiency regulatory requirements. O2Micro's OZ8027T LED driver controller with 3-level toggle analog dimming and power factor correction, the core of the Mean Well drivers, provides the patented 3-Step dimming technology. In addition, the OZ8027T features universal 85V to 295V operation, high efficiency, and integrated over-temperature, over-voltage, cycle-by-cycle current limiting, and LED short circuit protection, providing safe and reliable operation. Excellent LED current regulation ensures consistent lumen output regardless of varying line input conditions.

The Mean Well power supplies are available with constant current output of 350, 500, 700, 1050, 1400, or 1750mA. Output voltages range from a low of 12V for the PLM-40-1750 to a high of 105V for the PLM-40-350. The modules support a maximum output power of 20W to 40W at 100%, based on the LED string voltage. The PLM-40 and PLM-40E are in stock and available from Arrow Electronics, Inc., Future Electronics, and numerous Mean Well distributors globally at http://www.meanwell.com/contact_distributors.html.
