O2Micro Introduces SMBus™ Level 2 Battery Charger with Hybrid Power Boost Supporting Notebooks, Netbooks and Ultra-Mobile Computers

OZ8682 Highly Integrated SMBus Programmable, Multi-Chemistry Battery Charger Controller Provides Complete Battery Charging Control for Single Battery, Portable Computer Systems

October 11, 2012. O2Micro® International Limited (NASDAQ Global Select Market: OIIM), a global leader in the design, development and marketing of high-performance integrated circuits and solutions, today announced the introduction of a new low cost, high efficiency SMBus Level 2 battery charger with hybrid power boost technology.

The OZ8682 is a smart battery charger (SBC) that provides complete battery charging control for single battery portable computer systems. The hybrid power boost feature enables the battery to provide power in conjunction with the AC adapter. The OZ8682 features greater than 95% power conversion efficiency and is available in the smallest package on the market today.

Additionally, OZ8682 uses two high-side current sensors, charge and discharge. When charging with the system "On," OZ8682 dynamically allocates all excess AC adapter current to the charger, thus achieving the shortest possible charging time.

"The OZ8682 smart battery charger uses O2Micro's proprietary parallel powering technology. This patented technology enables parallel system powering by utilizing both the adapter and battery as essential components in supporting hybrid power boost, which makes possible the use of lower cost, smaller power adapters," noted Laszlo Lipcsei, vice president of O2Micro.

The space savings and performance requirements of today's notebook, netbook and ultra-mobile computers are driving demand for higher efficiency battery chargers. The SMBus interface of O2Micro's new battery chargers allow programming of the battery voltage, charge current and adapter current of various battery chemistries, including Li-Ion with 1 to 4 cells.

Product Availability and Additional Information
