O2Micro Granted Significant CardBus Controller Patent in Japan
October 13, 2005. O2Micro® International Limited (Nasdaq: OIIM), a leading supplier of innovative power management and
security components and systems for the Computer, Consumer, Industrial, and Communications markets, was granted 22 claims under Japan patent number 3,667,199 for its SmartCardSensing® Card Detection Circuit.
This patented invention offers notebook PC OEM's the option to use low cost PC Card passive adapters to enable Smart Cards on platforms with a SmartCardBus® controller. The connectivity model is based on PC Card communications protocols, allowing a user-friendly plug-&-play
environment when the technology is applied.
"O2Micro's SmartCardSensing technology drove Smart Card security applications into mainstream commercial notebook systems since it was introduced, and continues to be an important component of O2Micro's notebook connectivity
product line," said Max Huang, executive vice president of O2Micro's Intelligent E-Commerce business unit. "This patent grant from Japan complements those received from the US, Taiwan, UK, and European patent offices for this invention."
SmartCardSensing is implemented in the SmartCardBus® and MemoryCardBus™ families of CardBus Controllers. It enables O2Micro's advanced CardBus controllers to automatically detect and communicate with ISO 7816 Smart Cards and popular flash
media cards, in addition to 16- and 32-bit PC Cards.
